The 'Dancing Missile' Explained: The Science Behind Iran’s Sejjil-2

 Facts About Iran's Sejjil-2 MRBM

The Sejjil-2 (also spelled Sajjil, or called Ashoura/Ashura) is a two-stage, solid-fuel, medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) designed and built domestically by Iran. 

It is considered a significant technological leap for Tehran because it represents a shift away from older, slower-to-launch liquid-fueled designs.

Dancing Missile?

The viral video showing a white, wavy/snake-like smoke trail in the night sky is almost certainly the Sejjil‑2 — Iran's two‑stage, solid‑fuel ballistic missile, widely nicknamed the "Dancing Missile" or "Cobra trail missile."

In fact, Iranian state media specifically described the June 2025 Sejjil-2 launch as producing a “serpentine” / “cobra-like” winding plume.

Sejjil-2 is an Iranian-made missile. It was developed and produced domestically by Iran as part of its effort to move from liquid-fueled missiles toward solid-fueled systems. 

The CSIS Missile Defense Project describes Sejjil as a “domestically designed and built by Iran” two-stage solid-propellant medium-range ballistic missile.

Two‑stage separation: When the 1st stage burns out and detaches in a small explosion, the 2nd stage ignites — creating a bright flash and a sudden change in the exhaust plume.

High‑altitude wind shear: At 60–100 km altitude, strong, shifting winds twist the condensation trail into a cobra‑like, winding, corkscrew shape that glows white against the dark night sky (illuminated by sunlight from below the horizon — the "twilight effect").

The white winding shape is mostly the exhaust/condensation plume being distorted by winds at different altitudes, rather than the missile itself making huge snake-like turns.

The missile travels generally along its intended trajectory, while the exhaust plume remains suspended in the atmosphere. 

Different layers of wind can push different sections of the plume in different directions, creating that spectacular "snake" appearance.

What Iran Targeted with Sejjil‑2

The Sejjil‑2 has been used operationally only recently — in the 2025–2026 Iran‑Israel war. Never used before June 2025 — for 17 years (since 2008 tests) it was held in reserve, considered Iran's "ace in the hole."

The Sejjil-2 shown in the famous “cobra/dancing smoke” footage was launched by Iran toward Israel. The clearest publicly reported instance was during the June 2025 Iran–Israel war.

First Ever Operational Use — Operation True Promise III

On June 18–19, 2025, Iran said it launched Sejjil-2 missiles toward Israel. Israeli sources said the missile was intercepted, with fragments causing minor damage.

Israeli sources claimed full interception; Iranian sources claimed partial success.

The primary target set was Israel — decision‑making centers, air force bases, defense infrastructure, intelligence/Mossad facilities, and military industry sites.

Later waves (June 22–29, 2025): Multiple Sejjil-2s were launched. Some successfully penetrated defenses and struck military sites — including the Kirya military complex in Tel Aviv, air bases, and intelligence facilities. 

Israel's own data showed interception success rates dropped significantly against Sejjil because of its speed (Mach 10–12) and maneuverability.

Bottom line: The first one was mostly shot down, but later ones successfully hit their intended military targets — Sejjil proved very hard to fully stop.

Second & Third Uses — March 2026 (Operation True Promise IV)

Israeli targets again — air bases, military command centers, defense infrastructure.

U.S. military bases in the Gulf — first time ever used against American targets: Al‑Harir Air Base (Iraqi Kurdistan) and Ali Al Salem Air Base & Camp Arifjan (Kuwait).

Was it launched using satellite navigation too?

Sejjil-2 uses combined guidance: Inertial Navigation (INS) + Satellite (GPS/GLONASS) corrections.

Even without satellites, the inertial system alone is already very accurate — satellite is just the "precision boost".

Iran uses encrypted, military-grade satellite channels — not civilian public GPS — so it's harder to jam or spoof. Some reports also mention stellar/horizon reference backup for mid-course correction.

Why Sejjil‑2 Was Amost Impossible to Intercept

Extreme Speed — Mach 10–14+

Flies from Iran to Israel takes ~7 minutes total — barely time to detect, calculate, and fire. It re-enters atmosphere at Mach 10–14 (3.5–5 km per SECOND) — faster than any Israeli interceptor can catch.

"Dancing" = Unpredictable Path

Maneuvering Reentry Vehicle (MaRV): In final minute before impact, Sejjil‑2 weaves, zigzags, and changes direction — literally "dances".

Defense systems work by predicting where the missile will be — Sejjil‑2 breaks the prediction math. Every time it moves, radars must re‑track, recalculate, and re‑fire — exhausting interceptors.

Launches in minutes — No Warning

Solid fuel = pre‑loaded, ready to go — Iran can erect and fire in under 15 minutes. Older liquid‑fuel missiles (Shahab) need hours to fuel — easy to spot/preempt.

Saturated & Overwhelmed

Iran launched multiple Sejjil‑2s at once, mixed with drones, decoys, and other missiles. Israel had to choose: chase decoys → real missiles get through / chase real missiles → runs out of interceptors.

Each Sejjil‑2 costs ~$2–3 million**; each Arrow‑3 interceptor costs ~**$3–5 million — Iran could afford to fire 3–4 for every 1 interceptor Israel launched.

Two‑Stage = Extra Flash & Confusion

Stage separation at high altitude = bright flash + sudden trail change → can temporarily blind/confuse infrared seekers on interceptors.

Is Sejjil-2 Hypersonic Missile?

The Sejjil-2 is not classified primarily as a "hypersonic missile" in the modern sense of specialized maneuverable hypersonic weapons (like boost-glide systems or hypersonic cruise missiles). Instead, it is a medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM).

However, there is some overlap in terminology:

The Speed Factor: Like many medium and long-range ballistic missiles, the Sejjil-2 re-enters the atmosphere and travels at hypersonic speeds (speeds greater than Mach 5, with terminal speeds often estimated around Mach 10 to Mach 13).

The Distinction: In modern military terminology, a "hypersonic missile" usually refers to a weapon that maintains hypersonic speed and aerodynamic maneuverability within the atmosphere to evade missile defense systems (such as Iran's Fattah-2). 

The Sejjil-2 follows a traditional ballistic trajectory after its two-stage solid-fuel boosters propel it out of and back into the atmosphere, rather than actively maneuvering throughout its descent.

Sejjil‑2 vs. US & Chinese Equivalents

The closest comparison for Iran's Sejjil-2 is China's DF-21 family.

The similarity between Sejjil-2 and DF-21 is actually quite striking: both are roughly 2,000-km-range, two-stage, solid-fuel, road-mobile ballistic missiles. The DF-21 entered Chinese service in 1991 and has several variants, including conventional land-attack and anti-ship versions.

One particularly interesting detail is that Sejjil is actually quite large for its range: CSIS gives it a launch weight of about 23.6 tonnes, compared with about 14.7 tonnes for DF-21.

The US has no deployed MRBM in this class since eliminating them under the INF Treaty (1987–2019). The US does not operate a missile equivalent to Sejjil‑2. If forced to compare, Pershing II is the closest historical cousin but with shorter range.
