Esmail Qaani (Ismail Qaani) is a senior Iranian military commander and a brigadier general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He is best known as the commander of the Quds Force, the IRGC unit responsible for Iran's military and intelligence activities outside Iran.
Qaani was born in 1957 in northeastern Iran. He joined the IRGC around the time of the Iran–Iraq War. He eventually became involved with the Quds Force.
What does the Quds Force do?
Think of the Quds Force as the IRGC's overseas operations arm. It works with and supports organizations allied with Iran outside the country, including groups in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen.
The European Union describes Qaani as commander of the Quds Force and has accused the organization under his command of supporting the transfer of Iranian missiles and drones to regional armed groups.
His connection to Qassem Soleimani
In 1997, when Soleimani became commander of the Quds Force, Qaani became his deputy.
Their responsibilities were somewhat divided: Soleimani concentrated heavily on Iraq, Syria and Arab countries, while Qaani had extensive responsibility for Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran's eastern sphere.
On January 3, 2020, the United States killed Soleimani in a drone strike in Baghdad. Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei then appointed Qaani as Soleimani's successor.

Yes. Esmail Qaani survived the 2025 Iran–Israel war, and the available evidence also indicates that he survived the later 2026 U.S.–Israeli campaign.
During the 2026 U.S.–Israeli war against Iran, many of Iran's senior leaders and commanders were killed. According to Reuters, the strikes killed figures including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, IRGC commander-in-chief Mohammad Pakpour, Armed Forces Chief of Staff Abdolrahim Mousavi, and several other senior commanders. But Qaani survived.

Qaani earned the label "The Man With Nine Lives" after walking away from multiple major attacks while those around him died.
He survived when everyone else died — he left the compound minutes before the strike.

His Connection to Ahmad Vahidi
They are old comrades - from the same roots.
Both joined the IRGC at its founding (1979) — fought together in the Iran–Iraq War. Both served in the Quds Force — Vahidi was Quds Force commander before Qaani's predecessor Qasem Soleimani took over.
Same generation, same ideology, same hardline views — they know each other very well, for over 40 years. Vahidi was Qaani's superior in the past — Vahidi ran the Quds Force; Qaani served under him later.
Vahidi was senior to Qaani during the early Quds Force period. Vahidi commanded the organization before Soleimani took over, while Qaani subsequently served under Soleimani.

Before the strike
Vahidi was Deputy IRGC Commander under Pakpour — second-in-command, and Qaani was Quds Force Commander — controlled intelligence and foreign operations.
Feb 28: Both Khamenei and Pakpour died in the strike.
March 1: Vahidi became IRGC Commander-in-Chief.
Qaani remained as Quds Force Commander.
Vahidi runs the military, Qaani runs foreign ops.
